BIOLOGY 2B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Prenylation, Acylation, Beta Barrel
Document Summary
They define the boundaries in a cell, by separating the interior from the exterior the cell can create a unique internal environment. Bio membranes can also define internal microenvironments by surrounding organelles, the function of the organelle membrane is to provide the means of establishing the difference and also of maintaining it. They are selectively permeable, transport channels can move molecules in and out of a compartment in order to establish or maintain molecular differences. Different terms are used to describe the distinct surfaces of the bio- membranes in the cell: Exoplasmic face - the surface that faces the outside. Cytosolic face - the surface that faces in cytosol inside. Lumenal face - the surface that faces the interior of an organelle"s membrane. Some organelles with two membranes (ex. the mitochondria) have an intermembrane space. Tem images of a cell stained with osmium tetroxide, illustrate that the molecules are aligned in a bilayer to form the cell membrane.
