BIOLOGY 2B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Unfolded Protein Response, Hydrolysis, The Membranes

68 views5 pages

Document Summary

The rough endoplasmic reticulum is seen here in cultured epithelial cells using two different types of microscopy. Phase contrast --> see all of the membranes present in a cell. Immunofluorescence where green refers to er-specific protein antibody --> specifically see just those membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum. The membranes of the er are constantly changing shape and structure, undergoing fission and fusion, and migrating to new locations in the cell. The membranes of both the rer and the ser are continuous, but have different functions happen within them --> thus they look different using an electron microscope. Resolution of electron microscope allows visualization of individual ribosome complexes. Can see that the rough er is so called because of the rough appearance attributable to the ribosomes that dot its surface. Rer is the site of co-translational transport, protein modification, and formation of vesicles that will transport proteins from the er to the golgi apparatus.
