Major function of peroxisome is breaking of long fatty acids by beta-oxidation: in animals long fatty chains oxidized to medium chains then moves to mitochondria for further oxidation. Oxidation req for release of metabolic energy (both plants & H2o2-(catalase)->h2o +1/2o2 , the catalase in peroxisome breaks down the toxin into water and oxygen. Peroxisomes moves around the cell while changing shapes & undergoing fission & fusion. Peroxisomal proteins made in cytosol & transported to peroxisome. Peroxisomal membrane proteins ex:pmp70 are targeted to precursor membranes to create a peroxisomal ghost, once membrane proteins present, they transport peroxisomal matrix proteins ex: catalase into interior of the organelle. More proteins=growth and new peroxisome can form by fission.
