19 views2 pages

Document Summary

Stories in iliad and odyssey retain cultural memory of mycenaean civilization long after it had disappeared. Stories set it 1200 bc but not written down in greek until ca. mid 8th c. bc. Iliad: warrior culture like mycenae, with wealth of metal (bronze, gold, silver) reference to trade, and warrior honour system. Odyssey: much less rich, seems to reflect more of the dark age than the bronze age (odysseus" palace is rather poor place). Fresco of bard (singer of epic song), pylos. : shows someone with a laird, which is a classic greek instrument. Memorized lines of greek poetry and was able to sit by the megaron and recite certain parts of the story. Fresco from tiryns: two fellows in a chariot. Chariots play a big part in the iliad: battle scene tusk helmets, there are people fighting. They are fighting different people in different scenes, you can tell by the costume.
