Polyphemus is drinking very potent wine, its supposed to be mixed 20 waters to 1 wine. Wine: a mark of civilization ; always diluted. They hold a stake in the re until it is sizzling red hot, and they shove it in polyphemus" eye and twist it until they eye pops. Nobody has hurt him (which they nd funny) They cling to the bottom of the sheep to get out. Odysseus is on the bottom of a ram, and polyphemus stops the ram to talk to it and we see a soft side of the cyclops. Odysseus cant resist taunting polyphemus with his real name.
