Suitors plan to ambush telemachus when he returns. Odysseus and telemachus remove all weapons from the main hall. Odysseus has the slave girls locked away as well. Odysseus" resourcefulness, endurance; passing along to his son. Melantho (slave girl) speaks unkindly to odysseus. He tells her he was the son of a king on crete and speaks of entertaining odysseus. He tells her that odysseus will be home soon and (cid:498)rumors(cid:499) about where he has been. Penelope recognizes the past description of him. Eurycleia (cid:523)odysseus" nurse from his childhood(cid:524) recognises a scar on odysseus" leg. Penelope"s dream: 20 geese eat her brain, an eagle kills the geese (geese= suitors, She proposes a contest- suitors must use odysseus" bow to shoot an arrow through. She dreams about odysseus coming back, then she decides to marry one of the suitors (does she know odysseus is there?) eagle=odysseus. Athena encourages the suitors to abuse him, so he does not lose purpose.
