Reunion further delayed by conversation between eurycleia and penelope. Eurycleia tells penelope that odysseus has come back, she refuses to believe this. Telemachus is sent to create a false sense of order, odysseus does not want people to know of the suitors slaughter. Penelope tests odysseus by moving his bed out into the hall. Odysseus reacts very angrily, telling her why it cannot be moved. He built it into the house, a tree trunk was the base of the bed and the house was built around it. They tell each other stories of the past 20 years. They begin to deal with the fallout of the past years. Hermes, guide of souls - lead odysseus to the underworld. Recreation of the concept of heroism in the odyssey.
