Cultural centre of greek world in hellenistic period: 323 bce - 30ce. Athens was no longer the place to be for higher learning and philosophical thought it was. Alexandria was famous for being very well laid out and designed. Significant shift in all sorts of things (governments, politics, literary, poets) Alexander and his father took over, enormous fans of greek culture and literature. Spent time in macedonia with the king"s, possible that some of his later works were for these kings. Tend to think of this period as very turbulent/ and huge growth. Took over various parts of the world and named places after himself. Library; an important part of the mousaion. Poets of the time were scholars; engaged in skilled competition. Starts to become similar to a university. Staff at library tried to collect a copy of all classical texts. Sneakiness of staff (would stop any boats coming into the harbour to see if they had any texts)
