Juno"s hand in the marriage" of dido and aeneas. She breaks her oath of chastity after the death of her husband. She doesn"t think of it as a secret love anymore. Cloaks her sin = she"s breaking her oath to her previous husband/ religious implications/ Juno as enemy of rome she is a widow. Bigger problem is that they are not actually married. Engaged in sexual relationship with a man who"s not her husband. Looking to keep him in her land. He will turn away from this woman. He will return to rome and fulfill his obligations. Homeric allusion: the hero dallying with a woman. The end of dido= the end of carthage. Aeneas quickly obeys the orders of the gods. Mercury finds him in charge in construction of the city. Moment where aeneas is faced with leaving dido, this is where virgil shines. Aeneas does not deliberate this in any way, puts relationship into perspective.
