This is a remarkable intensity and frequency for any society. This conflict abroad was a sense of unity within roman society at home helping the struggle of the orders settle and work together. Something that brought everyone together was their common interest in and commitment to the waging of war: the chief offices main goal was to wage war (the consuls) The crucial part of winning office was to prove yourself in warfare and to achieve a military record of success: the benefits were not only to the higher citizens the army were ordinary citizens, a citizen militia. They would take time off of their economic lives to participate as soldiers. The citizen-soldiers won booty, or grants of captured lands: the military expansion gave a common goal to the people, and the booty coming in helped the poor"s situations. This is another reason why it helped alleviate the tensions.
