Modern myths: in the great gatsby the american dream. The american dream is the ability to be successful; differs from other societies at the time as it distanced the individual from their family. You can be more successful on your own than your family can be. (eg: first generation university student: democracy: idea that our voice somehow makes a difference. Not voting means giving up the myth that we have a say: belief in others. Eg: instant satisfaction w/a prof because we believe the university only hires certifiably qualified instructors. Pronouncement in the poetics that some elements of tragedy are more important than others. Elements of tragedy in decreasing importance according to aristotle: plot, character, thought** a play must invoke thought & make you wonder, diction, song/melody, spectacle.
