The greeks came to understand who they were from the gods. The olympian gods are often examples of poor moral behaviour; the gods are twisted" to account for human nature. The gods are anthropomorphic; they are very much, and to their own fault, human. Born from the castration of ouranos; other myth: child of zeus. Relationship w/hephaestus = troubling; standard myth that they married the ugly" god (h) to the goddess of beauty (a) Book 8 of homer"s odyssey tells the tale of the relationship between these 3 gods. => creates an inescapable, invisible net to capture the two while they lay in bed together. => calls upon the gods once the two are caught to humiliate" them however the other olympians laugh at hephaestus & praise ares for they would all like to lay with aphrodite. Different myths regarding aphrodite and hephaestus; not always married to one another.
