Numerous schools of philosophy sprang up in athens, beginning in the classical period. Greek philosophy had substantial influence on later philosophers. Philosophy aimed to explain the world and how one ought to live in it. Developed in athens, later very popular among the romans. Should be moved by neither joy nor grief, but simply accept what happens in life. Diogenes was called a dog by plato, which is where we get the term cynics . Tried to live a life in accordance with nature. Typically meant giving up possessions and renouncing desires. Several authors wrote works which describe socrates and his beliefs. It can be difficult to determine when these authors are describing their own beliefs and when they are describing socrates" beliefs (particularly a problem with plato) Famous for having a wife (xanthippe) who continually badgers him. Served on the boule and as a hoplite. Constantly questioning and ridiculing his fellow citizens made many hate him.
