A lot of greek and roman literature was highly valued and respected so it survives to this day: archaeology. The greeks and romans built with durable materials that survive to this day. Long history of archaeological research: inscription. Literacy not limited to writing literature (also included graffiti, tombstone inscriptions, etc. ) Greek heroes (achilles, odysseus, menelaus, agamemnon, etc. ) fighting against the trojans led by hector. Polis is a city state (plural = poleis) Autonomous entities, greece was not one single, united country. Greeks thought of themselves as citizens of the polis (e. g.
