Document Summary
Medical terminology is analyzed from left to right o o. Example: micr-o-scop-e = an (instrument for), examining, small (things) Example: cyt-o-path-genet-ic = pertaining to, the production of, diseases of, cells. These words are referred to as subordinating because each non-final element presents an idea which is subordinate in meaning to the element to its right - modifies meaning of that element. Some words contain two bases which are on the same level of meaning o. Example: faci-o-cephal-alg-ia = an abnormal condition involving, pain involving the head and face. Faci and cephal have same level of meaning. Words like these are called coordinating because two elements are on the same level of meaning and their translation can be joined by the coordinating conjunction and - neither is subordinate in meaning to the other o. Sometimes, in a term of three or more parts, the first two will occur in reverse order: determined by using common sense.
