Media issues/ current events: the federal government has announced support for news outlets under certain conditions, tax outbreaks for digital news subscribers, ability to issue charitable tax receipt, rationale: protect free press= democracy. Journalistic independence must be protected: reaction, package may be delaying the inevitable, nov. 27, 2017 due to postmedia-torstar deal 24+ community newspapers ceased operation, lots of people loss their jobs. Textbook says: media influence can be seen in all sectors. Individual: and yet media are imperfect tools for complete understanding of the world. Some of these challenges and trends seem new: most communication processes are not really that new but capabilities have been extended. Technology and society: putting new technologies into context, broadcasting offered a chance for balance, policy to ensure internet remains accessible and decentralized. Some forms of media have become obsolete: drawing on similar principles as old media, principles of selection may be arbitrary, may discover needs that did not previously exist.
