When parties prepare for collective bargaining, we are interested in their expectations because they are shaped by the economy, political event, law, etc. Bargaining power: ability to get agreement on your terms. Bargaining power is shaped by strike leverage: relative ability for trade union and members to take strike actions and sustain it relative to employers ability for employers ability to withstand a strike. We"re talking about a process and relationship in collective bargaining. Ongoing relationship in one bargaining round to the next and so there is trust and respect. Beginning stage: grand standing, party pestering, long list of demand, everything is a priority, all demands are important, expectation that many of these issues will be traded off through compromise or will be reserved for future bargaining. Middle stage: try and identify key points of other side, as well as likelihood ok keeping settlement without work stoppage.
