Short fiction, like literature operates in several registers at once. It is saying multiple things at the same time. A man swims across his suburban neighbourhood, from his friend"s backyard to his own house. The swimming pool walking across laws and drinking a cocktail: already established season, time of week, a typical sunday. A community that thinks of itself as everyone. I drank too much last night. : the world. Also a sense that the inclusive community is about materialistic (booze) Liquor is a way to being together people. He shouted, pounded on the door, tried to force it with his shoulder : entered a scene of violence, desperateness, forcefulness, ineffectiveness, helplessness. Saw that the place was empty. : solitude, confronting the emptiness. Privatized property that he is treating as his own: signs of change and loss in the suburban landscape. Looks like a victim, not in his right mind.
