Document Summary

Chapter 4. 2: measurement issues in ordering and evaluating objectives. Engineers measure all sorts of things, in each case a ruler or scale is involved. Rulers establish a common basis for comparison. Meaningful comparison of objectives can be made when rulers have a defined zero, and a unit to define the markings of the ruler. These properties enable strong measurements, which can be used normally in calculations. Ordinal scales are used to place things in a ranked order. Ordinal scales are useful in a scenario where things are not quantifiable (ex. If a client wants portability and low cost in a design, and portability is more important to the client, it can be ranked higher than cost (as portability and cost cannot be measured by a particular unit) Chapter 4. 4: developing metrics to measure the achievement of objectives. After ranking objectives, metrics are used to assess how well the design achieves objectives.
