Document Summary

Geography has a certain language with terms. Human geographic concepts: space, location, place, distance, distribution, density, concentration/dispersion, pattern. Areal extent (amount that is occupied by earth surface: absolute space. Objective, physically real, with measureable extent and definable boundaries. Key for map-making, description & analysis (explanation) of spatial distributions. E. g. mac campus size has not changed. Mathematical projections (commonly used with maps and getting an accurate depiction of earth"s space: relative space subjective/ perceptual and variable over time. Eg. mac campus - when you first come it seems like a huge campus, longer you spend here the smaller mcmaster"s campus seems. Locations identified by their relative positioning & importance, e. g. a topological map. Bus stations, their maps distorted distance because all that really matters is where. In topological maps, scale, distance & positioning are guesstimates you"re getting off. Refers to a particular position in space: absolute (mathematical) location: latitude & longitude coordinates using an arbitrary mathematical grid: 80w, 43n mcmaster"s location.
