Ethnic group: a group whose members perceive themselves as different from others because of a common ancestry and/or shared culture: often a minority within a larger population e. g. italian- canadians, chinese-americans, etc. Ethnic areas: a region or neighbourhood that is occupied (to varying degrees) by people of common cultural heritage (i. e. ethnicity) Personal or collective identity: tied to languages, religion, shared cultural past, ethnicity, race, etc. (cid:894)i. e. shared stories of the (cid:862)ho(cid:373)ela(cid:374)d(cid:863)(cid:895: consider st. patri(cid:272)k(cid:859)s day. Exclusionary: discrimination: e. g. ethnic or racial minorities may be excluded from (discriminated against) housing, employment, etc. Different social divisions exist in urban places e. g. socio-economic class, ge, ethnicity, race, etc: each has its own spatial patterns in cities, we call this: social-spatial segregation. Why does this spatial segregation exist: preserve culture, mutual support, minimize conflict.
