Urban issues: less developed (developing) world: rapid urbanization & urban growth. Cities are fantastic places: centres of cultural change, places of innovation, the life-blood of the modern economy, etc. Cities are horrible places: cities are substantial producers of waste, cities are incubators of poverty, despair, and resentment, cities are unhealthy. These are both true; cities are both good and bad. Issues facing cities in both the more developed world & less developed world. Urban issues: more developed world cities: suburbanization (& urban sprawl), urban decentralization: an increasing focus on the urban periphery, and a decline in the importance of city centres. Emergence of suburbs: beginnings of cities i. e. outside city walls, new transportation technologies, people could begin to commute to wok, post-wwii suburban housing boom. Land is readily available: planning regulations are weak, populations are wealthy & can afford large homes.
