Total area: ~23 m km2 (largest area) Population: 883 m (3rd largest) & fastest growing: nigeria: 174 m (fastest growing country, ethiopia: 87 m, d. r. Climate: aria/semiarid, south africa: 53 m, tanzania: 45 m, kenya: 44 m. Located in both north & south: tropical savanna. Congo rainforest - same latitude as the amazon: others. Southern margin of the sahara desert across the continent. Buffer zone between desert & tropical areas. Constantly shifting and moving - mostly south: mountains. Nile river - works north from the ethiopian highlands up through egypt into the mediterranean. Niger river - reaches the atlantic ocean in nigeria. Congo river - drains the rainforest region. Why sub-saharan africa & not all of africa: a mix of historical, physical and social factors lead to the decision to separate north.
