The more you improve energy efficiency, the more it costs you. Sometimes it costs less to save a large amount of energy or a resource than it does to save a small amount. Uses whole-system design all components need to be optimized. If well-designed component have not been designed to work together they will often work against each other. If everything is designed as a system efficiency maybe lost from mass production. Smaller pipes: cost less, need to fight friction, need larger pumps and motors.
