(ger in shandong, fra in the south, eng in yangzi, and rus in manchuria: boxer rebellion (1898) Cixi believed that foreign powers were pushing for her retirement, and through her support behind an anti-foreign uprising spearheaded by violent military units. People who fought were called boxers or righteous and harmonious fists .
