Rise of independent middle class of merchants + manufacturers. Coal and colonies theory: large reserves of coal + iron ore. Colonies + global trading networks meant a foundation for commercial expansion. Glorious revolution (1688) led to a thriving merchant class in house of commons. Good bank system provided funds for entrepreneurs. Britain"s pop doubled in a century due to the agro revolution. Used to divide land in large, communal fields; # of strips per family. Became privately owned farms or enclosed fields after enlightenment. Landlords started to use new scientific knowledge. Crops that didn"t remove nitrogen from soil means that more plants could be cultivated per year and more livestock can be fed (turnips or clovers) Of land used to be unplanted per year. Crop yields and quality of livestock increased. Surplus of food + increased protein meant better nutrition and fewer workers needed more people moved to urban areas.
