First partition of poland 1772 : very complex government in poland (assembly, is in an unfortunate geographical location, neighbours are russia, prussia and austria, struggled with internal con icts and civil wars (1766-68) Believed it would contain austria, contain their expansion, mollify catherine and get land for prussia: the three countries take about a 1/3 in total of polish land. Poland made the monarchy hereditary, majority rule decisions (previously unanimous), designed a constitution that created a constitutional monarchy, prussia initially supported it, seeing it as a step forward, russia opposed the new constitution (1793, french revolution and. 1795 - a third partition, there was a national uprising of the second partition, and was used as an excuse of the nal partition: poland ceases to exist as an independent state till wwi, The country may have gone away, but national identity remains in poland (1831, 1863 were uprising in poland) they supported napoleon in 1812.
