History 2q03 - imperial russia - week 8. Russia gained turkey as an ally, and in uence in the region, and gained promise from ottomans that no other foreign warships could use the straight, only russia. Convention of berlin (1833) - mutual defence pact, by either an internal and external uprisings: russia, austria, prussia were brought together because of uprisings in the 1830"s across europe. 1848 was revolutionary unrest across europe, russian forces were against the movements: nicholas became more reactionary and conservative, russians were not allowed to travel abroad. Post 1848, there was a conservative clamp down on the university: agents to monitor the censors was created, pressure on censors to nd revolutionary threats. Many in foreign politics grew to resent the interfering role nicolas has taken on in european politics: english, france and even prussia and austria (to a lesser extent) chaffed under russian interference.
