Thursday, september 15, 2016: there was only one year of peace during peter"s reign (his military needs impacted the timing and nature of his reforms) Great northern war - 1697, war with sweden who was an extremely strong force, dominant in the baltic: peter initially underestimated the leader of sweden (15 yrs old, charles xii) and russia suffered humiliating defeats.
