Document Summary

Disease specificity - each disease has some very specific cause and usually specific evolution, and symptoms, and because the cause is specific the treatments are also specific. Body focused, materialist - physical thing, happens in or to your cells or organs, about physical, matter, not about the mind, or psyche, or spirits, or chi. Reductionism - all diseases can be reduced to the smallest level, all have some sort of cellular process involved. Machine metaphor - the body is a machine, you have to go to a mechanic (the doctor) when it breaks down and put the right oil and petrol in it (medicine) to fix it. Individual oriented - all about individual behaviour, and choices, a very individualized processes. Health/disease dichotomy - one either has or does not have a disease. Church becomes less powerful, coincides with a schism within the church. Removed restrictions on anatomy, such as the right to examine bodies.
