HLTHAGE 1AA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Medicalization, Jack Kevorkian, Netflix
Document Summary
Power; compelling someone so that your own interests/agenda are met. We cannot separate politics from power, and we cannot separate health from power. When power is exercised to meet a person"s interests, that is politics. Relationships, friendships, families: they can all be political. Health and illness are not only about biology, it is also about political struggle. Inequalities: some people have more of it than others. Some are healthier than others, some have more access to health services than others. Often our choices about health are limited by social context. Health and illness come from broader inequalities (income, class, racism, sexism, homophobia, etc) We don"t agree on our stance on inequalities. Social determinants of health can be structured/addressed through politics. Building schools, hospitals, what kind of remedies are available, public transportation, prevention of "food deserts" These processes are negotiated; there are active interests being fought for.
