Although we experience it as individuals, our identities also carry social meaning. We feel that identities are intrinsic, but this doesn"t really work out in practice. Many different social structures act upon our identities. Such as race, gender, sexual preference, class, disability, etc. Social structures pose unequal health risks for some more than others, i. e. women are more likely to experience domestic violence and subsequent harm than men. How we experience and respond to health problems, i. e. straight v. hay responses to hiv. Individuals with marginalized identities are prone to greater health risks. Refers to a person economic position within the economy. Identity doesn"t change within a generation or when wealth status changes. A lottery winner isn"t suddenly high class, and a rockefeller who goes bankrupt isn"t suddenly blue collar.
