Lecture 1: why do we need critical health studies. What counts as health, illness, and medicine in one place or time may differ greatly from another ex- mental illnesses, autism, adhd etc . Personal, cultural, social, political, economic factors all snap your de nitions of these concepts. Health studies, as a discipline, seeks to understand how these concepts are conceived and which factors in uence the way we understand them. This is not helath sciences other the socials study of health. Focus on overall wellbeing rather than narrow emphasis on the processes and components of a persons body. Focus not merely on individuals, groups and communities have health status as well. Draws from early who de nition of health as not merely the absence of disease but instead a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing .
