Document Summary

A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder. How you look at the future, how you look at the past, how you view yourself in the present. Anxiety is often good for us because it is something that propels you into action. Anxiety becomes problematic when it"s happening without an exceptional reason. Emerged as distinct group of disorders in dsm-iii (1980) Previously, before dsm-iii, anxiety was part of neuroses (emotional disturbance, where person had awareness) Now merely necessary for fear & worry to be. End of the asylum era : asylums primarily housed psychotic individuals and those deemed too dangerous to remain in community. Anxiety didn"t real fit into that equa- tion. Freud"s emphasis on neuroses helped reshape 20th c. as the age of anxiety : people who wouldn"t have been diagnosed with anxiety before, now would be. Characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks - similar to a heart at- tack: typically occurs without warning, and finishes within 10 minutes.
