Mental illness is defined by the eye of the beholder. Mental disorders are characterized by their effect on: thought, behaviour, mood. Some disorders only affect one of these elements, others are felt in multiple areas (most) Spiritual problem (possession, problematic relationship with god) A balance problem (yin/yang, bodily humours: chemical imbalance (neurotransmitters) A personal problem (moral failing, problems in living: addiction is a personal failing depression, not concrete since it cannot be defined in a precise way. Internal conflicts in our mind which we must be conscious about. A social problem (poverty, naomi wolf: naomi wolf claims high rates of body disorders is a result of social pressures. The idea held by medicine and held by most of society today. Biological disease like any other, with viruses, lesions, and genetics causing malfunctions in the brain. Prenatal damage or genetics: no clear signs between a mentally ill brain and a mentally healthy brain. Doctors: causes social workers to get cut out.
