Evolutionary: anxiety and phobias adaptive in some situations, out of place in modern world: some behaviours that we now call disorders would have been adapted. Scared of spiders (would of protected you from poisonous spiders) People haven"t changed, but the environment has. Freud: anxiety a warning sign about id"s impulses. We get anxious when we"re about to do something we shouldn"t do : id and ed mediated by superego. Behavioural: learned behaviours acquired through conditioning and reinforcement. Avoidance rewards person: rewarded by not feeling discomfort or pain.
