If we"re defining mental orders by thoughts, behaviors, etc. it"s hard to pull apart. Emergence of hyperactivity: bradley home (orphanage) in rhode island (1930s). All kids had gone under a spinal tap. To avoid headaches afterwards, children were given benzedrine. Nobody thought that there was a problem, no category of disorder, illness, disease or anything that captured how kids performed in school. No diagnostic category to label the children: 1957, researchers publish on hyperkinetic impulse disorder . Symptoms hyperactivity, short attention span, irritability, poor school work. All children are prone to this behavior , these kids more like normal children than severely disturbed. By dsm ii (1968), deemed an epidemic in usa. Why did hyperactivity explode: label reduced complex issues to easy to understand explanation a hyperactivity problem, simple all sorts of groups could rally behind it. Schools liked it b/c they didn"t look like they weren"t providing right environment, etc. the kid was the problem.
