Because of the myth of the grey tsunami, the onus is put on individuals to age well but communities also have a responsibility build communities that are conducive to aging well. Who started the initiative in 33 cities in 22 countries who got together in vancouver to develop a protocol to determine which cities are age-friendly - focus groups were done with older adults, caregivers and service providers. 8 dimensions of the city were outlined and groups were asked where their cities stacked in terms of age friendly on these dimensions. The goodness of fit - does the environment match the abilities of older people. When there is connectivity between people in the city and their environment people are less likely to be isolated.
