Emergence of the psy-ences: psychiatry, psychology, social work. 20th century growth in size and importance of disciplines relating to mental and emotional phenomena. These disciplines play more of an integral part of our social lives. These disciplines focus on: moods, thoughts, emotions, behaviour. These disciplines grew in size and numbers. Moving from religious sites of authority to scientific sites of authority: medicalize feelings and emotions i. e. grieving process becomes a part of the medical domain. There is an underlying knowledge that guides our behaviours. Mental health concerns now central to everyday life, with 20-50% of population receiving a diagnosis; this is a radical shift. Many others prophylactically attempting to improve/protect mental health: massive growth in mental health industries. Self help books: mental health knowledge spread through schools, mass media, social media, police services, government services etc. These shifts have changed expectations about what it is to be human.
