Social construct - members of society have come up with it, it is not a natural entity it is an idea that members of society have created. Ex: teenager, is a social construct, in which you fight with your parents and sleep in, gender, race. Race and mental health: western psychology and psychiatry largely structed along lines that reflect society"s priledging of certain notions. Reductionism: we seek our own advancement and gratification, we are self centered, strong emphasis on individualism we care about our self. It reflects reductionism, we reduce disease do(cid:449)(cid:374) to the (cid:272)ell, (cid:449)e do that (cid:449)ith i(cid:374)di(cid:448)iduals i(cid:374) so(cid:272)iety. Europeans so they went crazy: asylum records demonstrate individuals institutionalized primarily for resistance to colonization cited as madness, arctic hysteria, eugenics. Some people are genetically better than others, so we should have them mate, and the losers not mate. Mentally ill people are a good example of those who should not mate.
