Gender: gender is something one does, sex is something one has, hegemonic masculinity, when an idea is so dominant it goes unquestioned. External: real differences based on socialization, types of mental illnesses women get diagnosed with, results from women being socialized to feeling dependant, emotionally unstable. The way we are socialized affects the differences. (no outlet for men to express their feels so they are angry) False differences based on research/ diagnostic bias: differential rates of mental illness are exaggerated, and women and men are closer than you think. There is a bias on a part of the researcher for creating the idea of difference: post industrial revolution (1750- ) women inherently more mentally ill than men.
