If addiction is fraught with so many uncertainties, why do we adopt concept so wholeheartedly: hard to determine if any one model is better or works better than another. In free societies individual governs themselves through self-discipline. Requires constant vigilance to make sure that we"re not doing something like an addict . The person who becomes the addict is the one who thought the personal feelings were grown. Keane: the problem with the addict is that his priorities are profoundly disturbed addiction is a state marked by caring too much about the wrong things and not enough about the right things . Issues: denying pleasure: o"malley and valverde: addiction discourse silences pleasure as explanation for behaviour. Precludes possibly that consumption driven by rational choice. The language around addiction precludes the idea that someone might engage in behaviours just because it is fun. Someone who sleeps with 10 people a week, the world goes around the addict.
