HLTHAGE 3D03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Stephen Hawking, Poster Children, Golf Cart
Document Summary
More than half of americans admit feeling embarrassed around people with disabilities, nearly half said they were fearful. By pre-school age, most children demonstrate a preference for non-disabled over disabled individuals-sign of prejudicial society. Misunderstanding of language e. g. : mental illness (psychotic + psycho, maniac) = diagnosable disorders not violence. Commonality/ rarity of illnesses (d identity disorder vs diabetes/arthritis)= would think did happened often from media and tv but actually very rare. Diabetes or other chronic illnesses= never really see them portrayed in media even though they are very common. Influence upon popular attitudes, more so than contact. Try to figure out how to change these attitudes. But thought contact would be best= contact with those with disabilities. But see that even if personally know someone with a disability can be swayed by media= media is stronger than contact. People with disabilities usually absent from media (normal disabilities (not stereotyped by media)) could facilitate exclusion from society-that they don"t exist.
