Document Summary

Psychobiology lecture 8: introduction to sensation and perception. Taste: each of these senses has a set of sensory receptors which intake information from the external world. Sensation - the set of events that occur at the sensory receptors/afferents. Perception the processing/interpretation of sensory information by the brain, which results in our awareness (of the world) The traditional five senses are: vision, audition (hearing), touch, taste and smell. Each sense has its own set of receptors for getting or receiving information from the outside world. These senses are stimulated by different types of information. Begin with stimulus from external world that you want to interact with. Receptors pick up information from stimulus in external world and converts the energy into an appropriate form to be processed. Transduction is the process of converting physical energy into electrical impulses (action potentials) Perception is when the brain has to interpret the electrical impulses to determine which external stimulus produced these responses.
