Deglutition: swallow: secretion- making mucus to help lubricate the food, mixing and propulsion-muscular contractions, digestion, absorption- small & large intestines, defecation- waste matter, parts of the mouth, gums, teeth & cheek. Work together to chew up food/masticate it: hard palate. Bony part of upper jaw: soft palate. When we swallow this structure goes up to close off the nasal pharynx so food doesn"t end up in nasal cavity: uvula. High sense receptors: superior/inferior labial frenulum. Tissue that glues down the lips: gustation: sense of taste. There are 5 primary tastes: sweet, bitter, salty, sour and umami (savory) Taste buds found in papillae (vallate, fungiform, foliate) Nerves conveying taste: facial (vii)- anterior 2/3 of tongue, glossopharyngeal (ix)- posterior 1/3 of tongue, vagus (x)- throat and epiglottis, olfaction: sense of smell. Types of teeth: incisors- cutting, canines- tearing, premolars- crushing, molars- grinding.
