How many hypothalamuses does the body have: autonomic nervous system, regulates: blood pressure, heart rate, digestive motility, pupil size, pleasure, fear, rage, temperature. Two, one left and one right. regulation, appetite, water intake, thirst, sleep, circadian rhythms, pineal, endocrine control. What kind of pain: stroke may occlude thalamic arteries. Loss of sensation on contralateral (opposite) side of body. 10 cns3: diencephalon, brainstem, and cerebellum: contralateral paralysis (damage to descending motor fibres passing nearby), burning pain develops weeks later. What does the posterior pituitary produce: releases hormones that are derived from the hypothalamus including oxytocin (uterine contractions and lactation) and vasopressin (water retention and raises blood pressure). What does the pineal gland secrete and do: secretes melatonin, which regulates sleep through circadian rhythms, with input from the hypothalamus.
