Supposed to block conception of a fetus. They work to keep sperm and egg from being united. Combo oral contraceptive pills, mini-pills, progesterone injections, contraceptive patches and mechanical methods like caps and condoms. They work to keep the fertilized egg (zygote) from implanting. They cause the termination of an established pregnancy. Coitus interruptus = cutting sexual intercourse cut short. Surgical abortion usually involves cervical dilation and scraping of the endometrium with a curette hence the name dilatation and curettage (d&c) Medical abortion is done with drugs - usually mifepristone (progesterone blocker) and misoprostol (a prostaglandin that increases uterine contractions) Proliferative phase: endometrium is immature and the cervical mucus is thin; more estrogen = more proliferation. Egg go from primordial to primary follicle to secondary follicle making estrogen. Secretory phase: uterine gland cells are producing max amount of secretions for the zygote and the cervical mucus is thick.
