HTHSCI 1H06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Insulin, Thermoregulation, Glucagon
Document Summary
Homeostasis: is the envelope of internal conditions which allows us to live. We must prevent extremes in temperature, ph, ion concentration and just about everything else or we die. We are constantly changing conditions so we have to regulate them. Internal perturbations: byproducts of metabolism, the things we eat. All cells and organs participate in homeostasis and the autonomic nervous system is dedicated to the whole process. It knows when variable has changed from its set point. Tends to reinforce a change in one of the body"s controlled conditions. Positive feedback mechanisms are always found within other negative feedback mechanisms otherwise the feedback that never ends. Must end with some distinct event that terminates the stimulus. An epileptic seizure results when synchronized neurons fire and recruit more neurons until they are all firing together and a seizure results. Extra glucose converts into glycogen then stored in liver. You are not dead until you are warm and dead.
