Document Summary

Hiv is the virus that causes aids. Infects the host and creates a copy. Reverse transcriptase converts rna to dna copy which is integrated into host genome. Symptomatic: suffer from infections that are not normal for a healthy individual. Huge burst of hiv virus at rst, then immune system gets a hold of it for a while until. Use of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (elisa) to detect the presence of antibodies to hiv. Add serum to wells coated with hivgp120 - take hiv proteins and stick them onto a plate. Put a blood sample from two different wells of the plate. Antibodies don"t bind with persons without hiv. They do bind in a patient with hiv. Take liquid and wash out the well. This knocks off everything that isn"t bound, but leaves bound antibodies on the plate. Speci cally binds only to a human antibody. Tells you if there"s antibody in the sample.
