Document Summary

Organic compounds are made up of the atoms: a h o n s p. If the compound is a straight chain it is called aliphatic. Iso pre x = 2 carbons are bonded to another carbon. Yl suf x = a group is attached to a compound. Carbons can be numbered, with 1 being the most carbon in the group that is the most oxidized. The other method uses greek letters to count from the carbon next to the most oxidized. Carbons also bond to form ring structures in many compounds. Compounds containing the 6 c benzene ring are called aromatic. The electrons are shared equally in these hydrocarbon structures, so they are non- polar (and not very reactive) Functional groups are structures that are bonded to the carbon chain. They usually are bonds between carbon and oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, or phosphate groups. They tend to be polar (most of those groups are more electronegative than c) and more reactive.
